Saint John Damescene (676-749)

This website was begun with a blessing in the blog on December 4, 2010.

That was the feast day of Saint John Damascene (676-749), a fitting day.

He is noted for several reasons:
(1) He wrote against the iconoclasts.(definition and relevance today will be cited in BLOG)
(2) He wrote of the orthodox faith (he was the Thomas Aquinas of the Eastern Church).
(3) He was the last of the great Greek Fathers.
(4) He was one of the two pre-eminent poets in the Eastern Church.
(5) His sermons highlight honored devotion for the Mother of Christ.

His quote on the Saints is included here:

“The saints must be honored as friends of Christ

And children and heirs of God.

As John the theologian and evangelist says (John1:12),

‘But to as many as received Him,

He gave them the power to be made the sons of God'

"Let us carefully observe the manner of life of

All the apostles, martyrs, ascetics and just men

Who announce the coming of the Lord."

'Let us emulate their faith, charity, hope,

Zeal, life, patience under suffering, and

Perseverance unto death,

So that we may also share their crowns of glory”
