O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Song

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Text

Exegesis Creighton Univ. Ministries

December 18

O' Wisdom,

Which proceeds from the mouth of our God Most High,

Touching, disposing all creation with strength and gentleness,

Until the end of all ends;

Come to teach us the prudent way!

O Sapientia,
Quae ex ore Altissimi prodiisti,
Attingens, fortiter suaviterque disponens omnia,
A fine usque ad finem
Veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiae.

December 19

O' Lord,

And Leader of the house of Israel,

Who appeared to Moses in the burning bush,

And gave him the Law on Mount Sinai;

Come to rescue us with Your extended arm!

O Adonai,
Et Dux domus Israel,
Qui Moysi in igne flammae rubi apparuisti,
Et ei in Sina legem dedisti:
Veni ad redimendum nos in brachio extento.

December 20

O' Root of Jesse,

Who stands as a sign of the people,

Which are despised by the world,

Over which will continue and reign His mouth:

Come to liberate us, without delay!

O Radix Jesse,
Qui stas in signum populorum,
Quem Gentes deprecabuntur,
Super quem continebunt reges os suum:
Veni ad liberandum nos, jam noli tardare.

December 21

O' Key of David,

And scepter of the house of Israel,

Who opens and no one closes, and who closes and nobody opens,

Come and lead from imprisonment

Those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death!

O Clavis David,

Et sceptrum domus Israel,
Qui aperis, et nemo claudit; claudis, et nemo aperit,
Veni, et educ vinctum de domo carceris
Sedentem in tenebris, et umbra mortis.

December 22

O' Rising Orb,

Splendor of eternal light and sun of justice:

Come and illuminate those who sit in darkness

And the shadow of death.

O Oriens,
Splendor lucis æternæ, et sol justitiæ:
Veni, et illumina sedentes in tenebris,
Et umbra mortis.

December 23

O' King of all nations,

And our desire, our cornerstone,

You who make all things one:

Come and save the man,

Which you formed from the mud.

O Rex Gentium,
Et desideratus earum, lapisque angularis,
Qui facis utraque unum:
Veni, et salva hominem,
Quem de limo formasti.

December 24

O Emmanuel,

Our King and Giver of Law:

Expectation of the people and their Saviour;

Come to save us, Lord our God!

O Emmanuel,
Rex et legiter noster,
Exspectatio gentium, et Salvator earum:
Veni ad salvandum nos Domine Deus noster.
